Hiking is one of my favorite hobbies. I enjoy the fresh mountain air and being out in nature. I always come back feeling refreshed and at peace. I hope to share my love of hiking with my own children and have already started making an effort to get out with my baby.

I thought I would share 5 tips to help you better enjoy hiking too!

  1. Plan ahead.

How long is the hike you’re going on? How long is it likely going to take you? Do you need snacks? Do you have enough water for yourself/your family? Do you have a child who naps that you need to plan around? What is the temperature going to be? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you be prepared before you even step outside. Being prepared will allow you to enjoy the hike without stressing about what you may have missed.

  1. Have the right gear.

Having the right gear will help you enjoy your hike so much more than without. You’ll want to make sure you’re wearing breathable clothes (wear/pack layers as needed). We love Belcorva leggings/shorts for hiking. They have side pockets, which are perfect for holding your phone and snacks. You can use code: sisters10 for 10% off your order. I love hiking in my Teva sandals. They are water friendly, but keep my feet safe and secure as well. If you plan to hike regularly, I would recommend investing in a hydration pack. You don’t need anything special, this one from Amazon should do the trick just fine. Last, my Goodr sunglasses are a must! They are lightweight and stay on well.

  1. Invite your friends/family to go with you.

I personally do not hike alone. If this is something you plan to do, please make sure someone knows where you plan on hiking too. Inviting friends and family can help make the hike even more fun as you share in the experience together. I always enjoy inviting people to come with me to my favorite hike. I love sharing this particular place with people who are important to me in the hopes they love it as well.

  1. Try new trails.

Sometimes trying a new trail can feel risky. Maybe you won’t like it. Maybe it will be harder than you thought. Or maybe it will become your new favorite. I try to set it as a goal to try at least one new hike per summer/fall. I use the app All Trails to help me find hikes in my area. This app is free, gives you directions, pictures, and reviews.

  1. Keep your end goal in mind.

Keeping your end goal in mind can help you stay motivated. Are you hiking to a lake? A pretty view? Waterfall? I have learned I personally like hiking to a lake or waterfall. I do not enjoy hiking to something with a view so I tend to choose trails that will lead me to a destination I know I’m going to love.

I hope these tips help motivate you to get out on a trail. Hiking is a fun way to exercise and experience new places. It can be done with your children, date night, or with your friends. It’s free and you don’t need much to be able to enjoy it.

Are there any other tips you would recommend? Feel free to share them with us in th comments.

Happy trails!
